Another year has passed at warp speed – something happens to time as soon as you’re a parent, I swear! – and my first born somehow turned 6 years old last week. It’s really bittersweet watching my children grow up, but I have to admit that I’m really enjoying my older son’s age. He’s becoming a big kid and is a ton of fun to be with and do lots of activities with, but he’s also still such a little kid, full of innocence and questions. Case in point:
We were listening to the radio the other day while in the car, and a commercial for some sort of children’s acting agency or actor search (I was only half listening) came on. My son’s ears perked up at the word “Disney,” and he listened intently, followed by the best series of questions in the most incredulous and sincere tone:
“Mama, did they just say you could be on TV? How would that even work? Will they shrink you and you walk into the TV??”
That’s really the essence of him right now: sweet, funny, innocent and, well, gullible. He still takes everything he learns and hears at face value. I love it and wish he would always see everything this way. His world still revolves around us, our family and his friends. He imagines living at home forever.
I think this year’s birthday interview again reflects who he is, what he’s learned and things he loves, and what’s relevant to him at the particular moment of our interview [I know some of the answers would be different if I asked them next week]:
- favorite color: red
- favorite toy: superhero and worker LEGO sets
- favorite thing about his brother: that he plays with him
- favorite tv show or movie: Wildcrats
- favorite food: pizza
- favorite outfit: jeans + Star Wars t-shirt
- favorite sport: tennis
- place he wants to visit for vacation: Mexico
- favorite animal: baby animals
- favorite song: Old MacDonald had a farm
- favorite book: LEGO Star Wars book
- best friend: Daniel
- favorite cereal: Puffs
- favorite drink: chocolate milk + lemonade
- favorite thing to do with friends: climb
- what his father does at work: talk about buildings
- something he’s really good at: baseball
- favorite ice cream flavor: vanilla + chocolate
- biggest hero: Mama + Papa [ok, my heart melted right then!! We superseded any superhero he’s heard of!]
- what he wants to be when he grows up: police man
Happy 6th birthday to my sweet boy! Please stay just as you are, innocent and sensitive, for as long as the world lets you.
I should have taken my camera with us to dinner, but an iPhone pic works just as well sometimes.
